Gilbert's Behavioral Engineering Model

Page history last edited by bbraine1@gsu.student.edu 10 years, 5 months ago

Gilbert's Model looks at the barriers that hinder performance of individuals.  The Gilbert model gives several avenues to examine and gauge a particular performance based problem. Gilbert's system relies on the basic assumption that individuals in the work place desire to perform well and that their lack of performance does not come from inability but lack of information of barriers established by managers or upper level decision makers.

Each levels of Gilbert's matrix comes with a monetary assumption associated with it where as the cost to ensure each level rises in costs, from basic information to monetary motivation for individual workers.

Gilbert's model is divided into to distinct parts, the physical or environmental and the behaviors of the individual. Each part can be viewed from three distinct avenues, Information, Instrumentation and Motivation.

From the Environmentalist view information as data, including expectations, FAQs, guidelines etc and from the individual view information as knowledge including training and individual knowledge.

From the Environmentalist view instrumentation as physical resources to allow for completion of work tasks and from the individual view instrumentation refers to personal characteristics and traits.

Incentives and Consequences/Motivation

From the Environmentalist view Motivation comes in the form of incentives and or consequences, incentives which can be tangible in the form of compensation or in praise or  advancement. From the individual view motivation can change the persons perspective in their view of self worth to the company or organization as well as effecting mood and confidence levels.
